Jia-Lien Hsu

Jia-Lien Hsu is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at Fu Jen Catholic University, also serving as Director of the Information Technology Center (since August 2025) and leading the Knowledge Engineering Lab. Hsu received a B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Computer Science from National Tsing Hua University; the dissertation received an honorable mention for the Best Ph.D. Dissertation Award of the Institute of Information and Computing Machinery.

Hsu's research began with music databases. Starting in 1998 Hsu published work on repeating-pattern discovery and content-based music retrieval at ACM CIKM, ICDE and ISMIR, and was granted a patent on the topic. The work later expanded to music recommendation and visualization and to EEG-based music emotion recognition — including a 2016 visit to the Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience at UC San Diego — and more recently to deep-learning approaches for generating music transitions, recognizing piano scores and restoring live singing recordings.

Hsu brings the same data-mining and machine-learning methods to medical informatics, language preservation and educational assessment, working with hospitals and occupational therapists on breast-cancer risk prediction, disease coding, medical image measurement and attention assessment tools, as well as on Atayal language preservation and AI-based essay scoring.
